Korean Fashion Show
A delegation from Sungshin Women’s University of Seoul, South Korea, brought their world-traveled Authentic Korean Fashion Show to Terre Haute on March 25, in Dede I of Indiana State University’s Hulman Memorial Student Union. Students from Sungshin and Indiana State universities modeled traditional Korean garments, as well as more modern fashions inspired by the ancient culture’s traditions. The delegation was brought to ISU and the Terre Haute community by the Office of the President through the university’s connection to the International Association of University Presidents, or IAUP. “I would like to thank Dr. Al Romo and the IAUP for making this opportunity available to ISU and our community. I think it is wonderful that Indiana State’s presence in global higher education can lead to our selection for this kind of cultural experience,” said Lloyd W. Benjamin III, president of Indiana State. Romo is the secretary-general of the IAUP. ISU’s International Affairs Center is assisting with hosting the delegation, and production assistance for the fashion show is being provided by Hulman Center. “We live in a globalized world and need to have a better sense of what other cultures are like,” said Michael Chambers, International Affairs Center interim executive director. “This fashion show creates an opportunity for our students and the community at large to interact with another culture.” ISU students majoring in textiles, apparel and merchandising, and students from the Fashion Merchandising Association are working backstage to gain experience producing and executing a show of this magnitude. Previous to coming to Terre Haute, the delegation will present its fashion show at the University of New Mexico, and will continue on from Indiana State to Chicago and then Yale University. While at ISU, Sungshin President Shim Hwa Jin, who is leading the 35-member delegation, and President Benjamin will sign a memorandum of understanding on March 24 at Condit House. “The memorandum will be a one-year agreement to discuss ways the two universities can pursue cooperation,” Chambers said. “We would like to consider mechanisms such as faculty exchanges, student exchanges, joint research projects, joint conferences and joint cultural programs as ways to pursue this cooperation.” Photos by Tony Campbell
